Seventeen members from the St. Andrew Baptist Church met in the Millville school house on August 17, 1900 and formed the Millville Missionary Baptist Church (the name was changed to Immanuel Baptist Church in 1937). At that time Millville was the largest community in this part of the state due to the fact that the largest sawmill in this area was located at the west end of Third Street on Watson Bayou.
There were no bridges across the bayou and what few roads existed were impassable during the rainy seasons. Most travel was by boat, which was slow and inconvenient, thus the need for a local Baptist church. In 1902 a permanent church building was constructed at 216 College Avenue, one block south of Third Street. Later it was replaced by a brick building and after two renovations, including the addition of an education complex, the church continues at the same location.
It has been our privilege to minister to many people, including military personnel from Tyndall Air Force Base during World War II, for over 100 years.
Many members have gone from this church to establish five mission churches which are now fully constituted Baptist churches.
We are affiliated with the Northwest Coast Baptist Association and the Southern Baptist Convention.
